Paganelli Bolts In Stakes
Taranaki punters are a loyal bunch and they made a sweet price for Paganelli m the Stakes. THE three -year -old filly, Lady Quex, . has done nothing- but win since Christmas, and when she silenced two open sprint fields within a week the locals were ready to hear of her victory over Paganelli. To them the Paganelli crowd should pass a hearty vote of thanks, for without Lady Quex the' price would have indeed been small. As matters, turned out, the return was quite a sweet one and never at any stage did the backers of the favorite get the trembles. Such a burst of speed has never before been witnessed on the New Plymouth track. Paganelli jumped to the lead with Cimabue and they travelled! The first furlong took twelve and the first two, twenty. Three were passed m thirty-six and the half m a tick over forty- seven. It was not till the last bit of the bend was reached that Morris let "Pag." have his head — his mouth was wide open rounding- the turn. "When he did get a bit of slack m a couple of strides, he was a length In front and each succeeding stride; found him increasing the distance. It was galloping- at its best, and there was no surprise expressed when the time was posted as a tick under thirteen. Many private watches made him go twelve and a-half, but as the official time was a record for the course, all were satisfied. On Saturday at Wanganui, Paganelli will not be at any fancy figure. It will be buying money this time and to be defeated, Carroll's horse will have to meet with some awfully bad luck.
