ON THE ROAD
Plight, of "OneNighter " CVERT year extended- motor touring *-*' is undertaken m this -country- byj- an increasing number of New Zealanqers and by ever welcome foreign visitors. Usually the latter take back riotnjing but happy memories of their experiences, save as regard .'weather or. hotels. The one they rightly regard as what is legally called an Act of God; the other strikes them as capable of improvement by taking thought. They cannot understand why facilities are 'not available all over, the country to profit by arranging satisfactorily for tours an the principle of staying one night m each place. In the more picturesque parts of this country, there are excellent hotels. But even where one attempts to book long ahead, often one has the greatest difficulty m obtaining accommodation, because, as commercial erterprises, these establishments are designed to cater primarily for the bar trade. But motor .touring planned on the principle of sleeping at a different place each night will continue to expand. .Therefore, surely cultivating it should be a profitable business? Could not much be done simply by improving the quality of the lesser country, hotels on the lines of competition organized- by the French Touring Club this year?
