ATHLETICS SERVED HOT
Some Good Chefs In Wellington
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Athletic Correspondent)
There were many tasty morsels m the dish, "Athletics en casserole," served up at the meeting between the. Wellington and Wanganui Clubs at Wellington last Saturday, but choicest of all were the performances of Milton Gane, cyclist, and Jack Fleming, quarter-mile New Zealand champion.
AS a cyclist, Gane has recently come **■ right into the limelight, and his brilliant pedalling on Saturday night brought the big crowd right to its toes and won for him a warm place m the public heart.
He collected- the half-mile handicap from scratch m slashing style, and also notched a ' decisive win m the mile scratch race.
. Neither Cyril Flett nor Jack Carswell, who were his chief opponents, are yet up to their last season's form, but both' are showing improvement now, and will have to be seriously reckoned with when the championships are decided.
Those two old rivals, Jack Fleming (Wellington), and Harry t Newton (Wanganui), met on the scratch mark m the quarter-mile flat, but that was the last Newtorf saw of Fleming, except from afar. The New Zealand crack gathered m his^field and then ticked them off m the straight to win comfortably with Newton out of a. place. A great deal of interest was attached to the ladies', events, m which there was a deal of outside talent taking part. Miss Kench, of Wanganui, provided a surprise by defeating some noted runners m the 10a yards invitation race. against a stiff head wind. Miss Stewart, of Wairoa, filled
fourth position close .up to Misses Wilson and Miller, of Wellington, who were second and third respectively. Miss Wilson won- the 75 yards scratch race and here also a surprise was occasioned by the performance of little Miss Barron, of Foxton. Only 15 years' old, without running shoes or previous experience, this little girl ran into second place.., Again, m the relay race, she ran '■ brilliantly and led Miss Kench and: Miss Wilson at the first change-over. What a great runner . she will be a little later, when coached and properly equipped! x The two Napier girls, Misses Hoyle and Doherty, failed to get places, but they ran well. Another interesting event was the appearance of Rydbeck, the exSwedish and N.S.W. champion, who came to light m the high jump with the winning figures of sft. 7in. Rydbeck was not entended and could have cleared more if necessary. He has a beautifully clean action and one can quite understand how he cleared 6ft. 2in. m Sweden. He should repeat the performance here, yet. All things considered, it was easily the best meeting Wellington has had this season and the centre may derive a lesson therefrom.
