The Old School
TO be last of the old brigade is a somewhat lonesome destiny, but it
hasn't impaired the cheery spirit of John Gault Dickie, father of the present member for Patea, and oldest man m Waverley.
John Dickie has passed his ninetyfirst year, but he still improves the shining hour m the garden of his beautiful home. A more interesting conversationalist — when once he gets on to the subject of the good old days — it would be difficult to meet, for Dickie is the last of the Maori War' veterans m the district.
With the Wairoa Mounted Rifles, he went right through the wars, and saw colorful days m the times when Maoris and pakeha were at daggers — or mere —drawn. In spite of the fact that he iioids the masculine old age record m his district, John doesn't rest on his oars, 'and is one, of the best-known and best-liked gentlemen m the Waverley district. ;
