At Home
"THERE was the warmth of a real home-town welcome m the ring of applause which greeted May Beatty m each of her appearances with the "Girl Friend" and "Hit the Deck" when the company was m Christchurch. . The greeting was not merely of the glad-to-see-you-back variety, but was a genuine expression of her townies' appreciation for the success she has achieved as a globe-trotting Thespian since she first hit the "boards" m 1891 as a member of Tom. Pollard's "Lilliputians." During her stay m Christchurch Miss Beatty was the. most called-on person m the city, and never was an idle moment allowed to interrupt her perambulations around the haunts of her girlhood days. , But with all the strain of teas and jaunts, she maintained a delightful freshness for the evening, and Royal Theatre patrons were able to see their home-grown actress diffusing liberally of- the talents. The visit was not without its pathetic moments, for her aged mother, after . an uneventful life of eightyfour years, joined the Great Majority six weeks before the company reached Christchurch. .
