LIFELESS
Southern Swimmers Held Back (From "JST.Z. Truth's". Christchurch Rep.) , Through the difference m temperatures m the water m the South . and North islands, South Islanders '* have for a long time urged that the national championships should be held, jater. m the year to enable , them* to complete their training. THEY declared that the . wanner . ..water ...in > .the, north gave North Islanders an advantage., through being able to start training- earlier. There were no' stronger urgers for the?, delayed championships than Canterbury, and last year they succeeded m their demands./ But with the deferred championships, Cantabs have deferred also the opening of their season, and . r up till the end of the first week m ' the New Yeafl no effort had been ■ made by the clubs to discover their likely candidates for national honors.
About the only competitor who is mentioned so far is Alec Stokes, and taking a line on his training, he looks Mice making the distance events interesting this 'year.
Th,e carnivals start with Amberley oh Saturday,, .and then there will be four or fiye'^before the end of. the month. •
In the meantime Christchurch people have forgotten there is such a sport as swimming.
