IN THE BOOM
Athletic Keenness In Timaru (From "N.Z. Truth's" Timaru Rep.) A new era m amateur athletics has dawned m Timaru. The old V.M.C.A. Club struggled to its last gasp last year, but just could not make the grade. There was only one thing to do. Disband and. work along some other line. THIS ;\vas done, and with the keener members of the . old Y.M. forming its foundation has come into being- the /Timaru Amateur Athletic and. Cycling Club with a fine set of officials of the real go-getter type. The club holds fortnightly evening meetings at the Caledonian ground. The three which have been held so far have clearly shown that . the action taken m forming the club was one of the wisest moves that could have been made. It was on the cards that a perfectly good "Cale." ground, would be going to waste m the evenings this year m Timaru f but now there is no fear of that. To show what can be done m Timarv (and the lads here are still a long way from top form yet) take note that L M. Graham won the hundred from one yard m 10 3-sseCs. R. Holmes, m a nicely-judged performance, peeled off a mile m 4min. 50 4-ssecs. G. Cpwles, m the mile and a-half cycle race, rode attractively and came home m a fust sprint m 3min. 52secs. A. D. McCrae, whom Wellington men will remember, placed 31ft. 6ins. between himself and a sixteen-pound shot. Early form indicates that success will be emblazoned on the records o'.' the first year of the existence of thi new club.
