NECESSITY FOR GOOD BRAKES

Traffic Regulations Demand Safety % PREVEOTION OF ACCIDENTS

The authorities desire to draw the attention of motorists to tlie necessity for having efficient brakes on their vehicles.

'"THE regulations provide that a motor 1 vehicle shall have* two brakes, each independent of the other, and capable of stopping and holding a motor vehicle under all conditions of service upon the' roadway. Each of the brakes shall be capable of easy adjustment, and one' must ' be. so constructed as to be operated by the foot. ■It is of the utmost importance that brakes on motor vehicles shall be maintained m perfect order both for. safety of the motorist as well as^'fpr other users of the roadway. Any person who drives a motor vehicle, having brakes which do not comply with, the- above conditions, is guilty of a breach of the regulations, and the owner of the vehicle is also liable ' to proceedings being taken against him. . Cases have come .under notice re-

cently m which vehicles left standing on a down grade have started off. It is pointed out that it is a breach of the regulations for the driver of a vehicle to leave it standing m a street without having taken due precaution against the possibility of its being started m his absence. It is not sufficient to leave the hand-brake on m view of the fact that the possibility is always present of some mischievous person releasing same, and thus causing serious accident. Wherever possible, the wheel should be turned m against the kerb. With the volume of traffic now on the roads, too much attention cannot he given to the maintenance of brakes, Properly maintained brakes will often prevent serious accident.
