Charitable Bert
Iy'NOWN like the town clock m IfV Wanganui and many other parts of the North Island is "Bert" FryIf you sliould happen to visit the River City and notice a big chap with boyish, smiling countenance, wearing" a buttonhole, well, it's "Bert," and if you still have any doubts . regarding his identity, then just look for the carpenter's rule sticking out of one of his pockets. "Bert" is a man of many parts and a particularly busy one. One of his chief hobbies is the Swankers' Club, and, as the president, he has infused a great deal of life into this Society which does so much for charity m Wanganui. To any deserving case he never turns a deaf ear and many families owe him a deep debt of gratitude. "Bert" does not wait for thanks when he has performed some charitable act. He simply waves his hand and says: "Cheerio, I will be round again m a day or so to see how you are getting along." "Bert" is also an enthusiast m boxIng and for many years has been associated with the local asociation. He is also a keen follower of athletics, and last, but not least, he is a bowler. By the way, a firm of Yankee land sharks, on a recent visit to the States, entertained "Bert" for a day arid tried to sell pm a fruit farm. They nearly talked him blind, but "Bert" won out m the long run. and returned to God's Own Country minus the apple orchard.
