BRIGHTENING

Wellington Cricket Improves (From "N.Z. Truth's' 1 Wellington Rep.) Stuart Dempster is at it again. On Saturday he put himself well ahead of any other -Wellington player by scoring 144 not out. HEMPSTER was the chief factor m . Institute's defeat of Petohe at the Basin Reserve last Saturday, but the whole side, under the inspired leadership of the little representative, pulled together. In reply to Petone's first innings total of 137, Dempster and Co. replied with 248 for two wickets. Dempster, m association with Foley, pasted the bowling all over the field with delightful batting. Then the Institute innings was closed. Petone. had a hard run m staving off an innings defeat, but Smallwood put his back to the wall and did ' the trick with a nice halfcentury not out. Wellington turned on the fireworks against Varsity and the students found fast bowler Cousins a thorn m their side. This promising young player gathered m eight wickets for 39 runs. He tore down the wicket with a fine length and imparted plenty of sting into his deliveries. Wellington scored a win on the first innings and gave a free display of batting until the close of play. Midland sneaked home against Hutt, Wiri. Baker contributing a nice 78, and Kilbirnie up-ended Old Boys m the first innings of a game devoid of sparkle.
