GREASE-GUN DRUDGERY

Remedies Applied In Improved British Models I I

COME months ago an article appeared m the motor columns of "N.Z. Truth" on the "slavery of the grease-gun."

'THAT the statements made at the 1 time f castigating manufacturers for their lack of enterprise m not maleing the job greasing the chassis points easier, were justified,'is proved by the fact that one of .the outstanding featuresof the latest British cars is simplified chassis lubrication. In.some instances greasing points have been grouped together m pairs and fours at accessible points. In others all the points are separate, but can be reached without crawling underneath. Still other/makers have adopted a one-shot- type 'of lubrication, whereby the depression of a plunger lubricates the whole of the bearing points. In some of the medium and higher priced cars, rubber and greaseless bearings are employed where possible, still further reduc* ing the work of greasing. The only fault that can be found with the one-shot system is that should an oil-pipe break or become

fouled, the bearing it serves is starved. With4he grease-gun used on .an accessibly. placed nipple the job is easily carried out, and one can readily tell by' the resistance to the pressure whether the bearing is' getting the lubricant, In the artici c! referred to, "Truth" also advocated a reduction m the number of greasing nipples underneath a car. Lateat modei Sj .British ' and Amerlcan r are conforming to this idea, and the new chassis will ;be far less trouble to go round than previously, From 1924 onwards there.seemed. to be a perfect mania for placing greasing points at every part where there . was the slightest movement,, Some American cars were great sinners m that respect. Now the tide has turned, and the result will be a great benefit to every owner.
