Eighteen Carat
IF there is one man m Dunodin qualified to adopt, %as a day-to-day slogan, the old saying "All that glitters is not gold," it is Alexander Whitley, Inspector of Mines for Otago and Southland. And Whitley, let it. be known, IS a miners-one of tho old diggers, who has served his time with pick and pan. Therefore he knows his job, which is more- than can be said of many officials holding doAvn inspectorship billets m our various Government departments. :'. It is said that everyone should possess a geographical knowledge of his country, but ■ put Alec. W. to the test and he'll give, you also an "anatomic" 'description of our two, little crusts of earth, for his mining experience, even before he, took up Government service over 20 years ago, has taken him to every mining centre m the Dominion. 'When he got tired of tickling old •New Zealand m the ribs he'd take a run over and 'flirt with the soils of Western Australia and Queensland — ■that was 'way back m the late eighties. A quiet-apoken, unasuming fellow is Alexander Whitley, whose oasy-nature is t)ie hall-mark oC the hard-handed but aoft-hearted, true type of miner.
