IN THE EYE

Firelight Glanced,

Then Won

(By "The Toff. 11 )

Firelight got away well from the tapes m the Methven Cup and ran to the front. He looked Baynut In the eye and went on to win com* fortably. THE aged • gelding driven by Albert - . . Hendricksen and trained at Lauriston by O: S. Hooper,' went a good race for his- popular owner, W. MacDonald. Firelight got away nicely and gradually worked his ' way through the leading divisions. • With six furlongs to go, he raced to the front where he remained with Baynut only to run on at the finish and beat him comfortably. Hackthorne jumped to the front at the start, and led into the back stretch with Royal Authoress, Laplander, Beverley Audubon, Warepa, Great Triumph, Dick Logan, Mac Dillon, Kreisler and?. Linkman travelling m close formation. .' . ;. ,•■•-. Going through the stretch Royal Authoress and Warepa were together in' front, with Hackthorne, Great Triumph, Dick liogan, Mao Dillon, Kreisler and Linkman tucked m behind them. , Entering the baok stretch Hen- . dricksen brought Firelight out from a forest of pacers and taking the lead, he showed them the way home. Royal Authoress pulled hard over the first mile and a-quarter and then died away when the straight was entered. Warepa went a promising race for a mile and a-half, where he gaye m. This suggests that Warepa still is short of stamina,' his best race to date being over a mile and a-half. In Bprint events Warepa is a big possibility. Great Triumph is building up slowly from the set-back he got when he was gelded. He was prominent m the Methven Cup for twelve furlonga, but after that he was done with. Great things are expected of Linkman. He was well placed with a mile to go, but like a number of .others, he had had enough when it came to the last two furlongs. Linkman is a speedy pacer that will pick up a race or two shortly. The first half-mile was done In 1.18, the first mile In 2.25, and the last eight furlongs m 2.18. Real Light made a slow beginning and was In the rear all the way. Is Western King as good on a grass course as he Is on a dirt track? His action suggests he is better on a dirt cirouit, and no good on either if the footing Is holding. •■■..■• , ' • Everybody knows that Great Change is a world-beater m private, but his recent form has not endorsed his private undertakings, hence the preference for Maxegin.
