Cobbler Loasby
THE early pioneers who walked the" uneven ways about G rey tcfwn fifty
years ago soon found need for repairs to their footwear. David P. Loasby guessed it; and he was ready waiting m his little shop with a broad-head hammer and a mouthful of brads.
David Loasby works with lasts and lasts with work. During his residence m Greytown he has been associated with almost every public institution m the town. He occupied the Mayoral chair longer, perhaps, than any man, and did- more than his bit towards inauguratingthe public utilities the town now enjoys.
He believes m the home life of the community. As chairman of the Wairarapa Permanent Investment and Loan Association he has played a large part m the distribution and safe investment of the £80,000 that the organisation has handled, while the Greytown Trust Lands Trust, of which also he is chairman, owes mainly to him its scheme of home building. In numerous other bodies is he an active figure, and is chairman of a fruitgrowing company which controls the largest apple orchard m New Zealand. Bowling and fruit-growing are his hobbies.
