RUNS HOME ON THE BIT

Pageant Headed Bollard Field When He Liked (By "The Toff.") With nearly three-quarters of the journey covered, the Bollard Memorial Handicap gave promise of providing a stirring finish. Then most of the field cracked up and the finish was left to two horses.

pOING out of the straight the last VJ time, Double Event, which was m second place at the time, commenced to "rock." A few strides farther on he came back on the field rather suddenly and spoilt the chances of Golden Bubbles, Parkwood, Marshal Neil, Mate o' Mine, Orphan ; and Rebel, the latter pair being sent to a break. At that period of the race Jolly Chimes was m the lead, with Pageant just behind him on the rails and Double Event alongside Pageant. Of the party interfered with, Orphan appeared to be going best, and he undoubtedly would have entered into the argument for first money when the straight was entered.

But it was not Orphan's day. When the incident occurred, Jolly Chimes and

Pageant drew right away from the field, and as they went along the back stretch, Marshal Neil and Mate o' Mine, which had sorted themselves from the melee, set put to pick up Jolly Chimes and Pageant. However, neither was equal to the task. Jolly Chi nies, who had led from the rise . of the barrier, still was m possession when the straight was reached, but once m line for home, J. J. Kennerley pulled Pageant out. There was a sharp tussle, during which Pageant triumphed over his. opponent, and home he came with an "advantage of half a length from his rival. It could have been more. Pageant, who is trained at Christchurch by W. J. Tomkinson, Is by Logan Pointer from Agnes W., and is owned by R, A. Armstrong and A. L. Johnson, of Wellington.
