TRIO OF GOOD HORSES
Seven Furlongs Will Suit" Them To A Nicety
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) One race at Avondale on opening day to create a deal of interest will be the Henderson Handicap of seven furlongs.
•THIS because two promising per--1 formers of the winter m Ohinemuri and Miss New Zealand are likely to be among those lining up at the tapes. Ohinemuri has already prove.d, her worth by heading off the Prince of Wales field at Ellerslie. That day she did the job well enough to indicate that there is still more money for the daughter of Potoa. As for Miss New Zealand, the sister to Eerie simply played with a field of hacks over a mile at Ellerslie m June, since which she has not faced the public. It will be her first attempt to head off the open class, but she is possessed of the game trait — and gameness usually tells. Another which struck "N.Z. Truth" at Wanganui as being m the best trim of his career Is Te Koroke. His two seconds last week indicate better things for the chestnut.
High Pitch usually likes it soft, while Phaola is slowly coming right, though this race may be too early. Thursby has wintered well since aocounting for an open sprint m July, while Transformer is m light enough at 7.4. Papatu may not have the brlllianoy over seven furlongs m thig clasa, while Modest Boy, Master Doon and Aurlculus are down with the bottom weights and because of that their prospects are not absolutely hopeless. Te Koroke has recent racing to recommend him, but should he strike •O'hinemuri and Miss New Zealand absolutely ready for the task he will find them hard to head off. They may both have it on him at gaining favorable positions early. It looks like one of this trio: TE KOROKE, OHINEMURI and MISS NEW ZEALAND.
FAMILY_ SPEED Green As Grass, She Stil^Wins Either Bill Haztett was a flood judge, or he was a bit luoky, the day he bought Simper at Masterton. TT was at the dispersal sale of Rupert A Morrison's stud at Blairlogie that the imported mare Simper went down to Bill's bid of 1100 guineas. What the progeny of that mare have won m the interim the mathematicians can tell you.
There have been Gold Light, BeacOß Light, Razzle Dazzle, to mention threa, that have won good money carrying: the Hazlett colors. Gold Light was a real ohampion and the other two (were near champions.
At wanffanui on Saturday, Bill's (trainer, Stewart Waddell, produced another of th« ' br m e T?« « „ Stewart Waddell This was Speed Light, a filly by Paper Money out of Simper. Seen last June at Waddeirs at Greenmeadowß she had not been asked to do much.
Stewart, when apoken to, said she was a beautiful fllly to handle, but, he added, "it remains to be seen how she goes when she is asked to do her part." When, at Wanganui last week the fllly was produced there was a lot of talk about her, but most said she was not ready to win. They were half right— in the early part she got herself into a lot of trouble but, once into the straight and clear, she showed all the family pace. Once to the front she was a real melon, but that race will work wonders m her. Even coming Into the birdcage she was wondering what It was all about.
