He Goes South
*THE boys of the Wellington Cus--1 toms and v Marine Department — perhaps we should hot call them boys, but they are. such good fellows that we cannot help it — are not feeling too happy these 1 days. i
Ask one of them and he will tell you m a plaintive voice that "Fritchard is groins' away." ■ ■ ' Yes, G. Pritchard is going to Dunr edin, the Edinburgh: of the south, where his thoroughness m -looking after the affairs of His Majesty's Customs will meet with the warm approval of the good Caledonians. The worst of being popular is that it is so hard to leave good friends — and Pritchard will take many a, farewell with regret.
But promotion is a hard task-master; he must perforce pack his bag and move .south when it means that he slides yet another rung up the ladder of progress.
If, one of these days, you are caught smuggling a packet of "greens'' ashore at Dunedin and are haled before Subcollector Pritchard, rest assured ; that he will do his best to overlook your crime. But don't try it a second tijne.
