MVTEW ZEALAND TRUTH" joins IN with the reat of New Zealand In congratulating Dr. J. Gffies, of Auckland, who has just passed the ninety- six mark.

He came to New Zealand m 1868, m those stirring times when, the Dominion was being founded. ■

After all sorts of adventures, he served m various posts, . including settler, army surgeon, gold digger, magistrate, editor and m capacities where his knowledge and advice were indispensable In the administration of the colony's affairs.

Among his recollections is a personal friendship with Florence Nightingale.

And now, m the evening of his days, he has the memories of a life well spent — an adventurous . life that, despite its many phases, -vyas all for the good of those about him.
