(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) Marist gained a well-earned win over Kaierau on Saturday, and this victory secured for them the local club championship for 1928.. MANY Rugby fans expected Kaierau to defeat Marist on Saturday, "but such anticipations proved to be wide of the mark, as Marist showed better condition, more pace, and superiority m. tactics, finally winning iby 17 points to 7. • Tne play was hard and fast. The speed and dash of the Marist forwards and the pace and better judgment of their backs upset the calculations of Kaierau sup* porters. Early m the grame Murray scored a try for Marist by following up a pot shot at goal, securing the ball, and over. Kruse, Vangioni and V. Crotty also crossed the greens, Vangioni converting one ana Narby kicked a splendid penalty goal. For Kaierau Coupand.an ex-Victor-ian representative player, potted a goal, and A. Lockett secured a try. Murray and Vangioni were outstanding among Mcrist backs, the former playing better than m any previous game this season. Vangioni played, a great game. He was m his right position at five-eighths, and was the hero of the match, showing fine dash and putting In some brilliant runs. His form on Saturday demonstrated more than ever that it was a sad.mistake to play him as a naif-back m the rep., matches, where he was- out of the place. When the whistle sounded, "Vangi's" team mates hoisted him shoulder high and carried him off the field m «»preclation of the splendid game he had played and his excellent work as captain. It was a popular win, and on the season's; play Marist certainly deserve the championship. . Throughout, except for a couple of weeks when Vangioni was on the injured list, Marist played good Rugby, and Saturday's display was one of their best. Pirates drew with Tech. Old Boy's ,on Saturday after a drab display. ' Early In the game Pirates scored a try (unconverted), and it was not until a few minutes before the-end that Tech. evened up the points. A free to Tech. near the touch line' saw Telly kick a wonderful goal. Pirates were the runners-up for the championship, finishing two points behind Marist. Their play during the season has ibeen very m and out — mostly out.
