STRAIGHT BITS AND SPURS

PULLS HARD WHEN Starboard Light won t*he open " six the first day at Dannevirke by half a minute, the jockey came m for some abuse by outsiders. It is Just as well that the outsiders do not have to ride the chestnut. He is one of the hardest pullers m the country, and once he jumps out he has to be given his own way. There is no more show of stopping him that trying to collar an express train. DRINCESS RONNIE has not run well of late and she dropped dead at Marton the other morning. TN the ordinary oourse of events MoDonald rides Home Made, but he picked out Ponjola m preference to the Gaisford gelding at Dannevirke. And Home Made won! BETTER THINGS j THERE will be no mistaking Oney Cox's charge, Kaka, when -he graoes the turf. The three-year-old, which races m the interests of G. P. Moore, Is an at-traotive-looking chestnut with four white stockings. He gave promise of better things when he finished third to Whisogne and Green Acre In a seven furlong hack event at the Taranaki Hunt fixture. QTHON started as a hurdler at Dan■nevlrke and won on his first up. The little fellow takes a lot of riding and the harder he is hit the better he goes. DISTANCE BEAT HER THE distance beat Miss Mercla last week. Though capable of improvement, she may be beat to follow m six furlong events, if a profit is looked for m the near future. A CERTAIN horse and a certain boy were down with the 'flu at Dannevirke and the boy thought the horse deserved first attention. DANGI SARTO was not a runner last week at Dannevirke, but he is to step out at the Manawatu Hunt meeting, under whose auspices he was qualified. WHEN Piklmai won his Hunters' - Hurdle raoe at New Plymouth last Saturday, it was mainly due to the fact that he was steered more patiently m the early part than those he headed off from the last fence home.

NOT FOR HIM AN effort was made to sell Our Jack ** at Dannevirke the other day. The auctioneer waJs v bid 65 gns. for the gelding, but, when he was knocked down, the bidder didn't want him. The owner. advised the bidder to get a wooden horse. There is one thing about wooden horses — they don't need feeding. CIR WAI did not remain m Herbert Galaford's hands long. He gave him away to a friend. That friend may be turned, into an enemy. DALE STAR had only one race at Dannevirke — for a win. He was railed home the next day, but should be on hand at Marton this week. THE 1 money came for Court Jester m his only run at Dannevirke and some of the hard heads fell for him. They were a sick and sorry lot shortly after the start. JUST GOT THERE TE ATIAWA did not have matters all his own way when he won at Taranaki last week. However, his speed carried' him round the home bend nicely. Mclnally, Mick Carroll's apprentice, was aboard, but he had to use up all his energy to defeat Flying Shot m the run home. ' TACKEROO, had he been m- Sydney J last week, would probably have been given a vote. As a racing proposition he is not one. nOINd- a come-back was Rouen at Dannevirke. He looked rough, but his efforts were anything but that. .He may pick up a race yet — on a soft track. ABOUT TIME TN the last eighteen months nothing has raced with more bad luck than Kalos. He has ever been near the money, and m the money, without getting the winning end. But a success came his way the second day at Dannevirke — and it was deserved. INTO FORM TEENIER had a race at New Plymouth and will probably be all the better for it. He has displayed plenty of pace m hack races and should be worthy of consideration again among the minors.
