Narrow Victory Over University f<From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) With the representative fixtures" disposed of, a continuation of the Devonport Shield round was made last Saturday. WITH Mt. Eden and University meet--1 ing, it was expected that a good display would be witnessed, but the players failed to rise to the occasion and play "was very mediocre. • The one goal difference m the scores — In favor of Mt, Edet — was just about the difference between the team?. Mt. Eden early held the advantage, being two goials up on the students, jbut the score evened up again before . Shalf-thne; ..... • Alexander was prominent throughout v the. spell and gained, both Mt. Eden's ; j'/go^s./ ■ In the second half i the centre > jjagain;; came . to: light and worked ' -through- to give Eden the deciding goal. Among the backs, Mainland and Surman proved sound; with the halves ,-' well, m: support, they had the students' ,;,', van dp agalrst a. hard problem ai to the best way to penetrate the defence. -The students also presented a .solid defence to the onslaughts of the browns, Sparling, m particular, being well on his game. After going through the "B" section of the championship matches without a loss; Otahuhu started out to do the same thing to "A" section teams m the Devonport Shield, but m St. Luke's they- met their masters. \ ..Though only one goal separated the ■teams at the finish, the Saints held the V ifpper. hand throughout/ ' . .' ■ .SAINTS SCORE > Only good defence by Otahuhu, aided by the Saints' poor circle work,, held the score' down to that margin. - The Saints, nevertheless, nearly left their winning goal until too late, for' it ~ was m the closing stages of the niatch v- that they scored the decider. Hard hitting and fast play marked the meeting between North' Shore and "Somervllle Colts; again there was only one goal difference between the teams, the honors being gained .by the "A" section side. Shore gained the only goal, in' the ' flrst spell and were, first to score m the second. This second reverse set the Colts on a whirlwind attack and Ran- . t kin was kept busy keeping his goal clear. A scramble m the goalmouth . brought about the desired result, but the effort had been .made too late— the final whistle ended the vericounter befo/e the Colts could again storm the citadel to obtain ,a.'.d£ayv.' ~- "It was, perhaps, the best encounter of the day, the teams-being "well matched, both, knocking fhe ball about m their attenipts;tp.;break through.
