A DERBY HOPE
With Alice Axworthy
In Aussie
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) When Alice Axworthy made the trip to Australia, it was expected that she would be seen to advantage once she sported silk. TN view of her Great Northern Derby •*• engagement, her doings m the Commonwealth were keenly awaited here. To many it came as a shock to learn of her defeat off the limit m a 2.30 mile at Richmond. However, although a few have an inclination to cry down the daughter of Worthy Bond because she failed to make good first pop, the majority will sooner wait a while before voicing an opinion. Her Derby prospects may not be as hopeless as many imagine, for it was asking something of one of her age ■ and sex to make such a long voyage and then produce the goods the first time she stepped on the track. She has— in comparison with other Northern Derby candidates — something m her favor, for she is getting the racing and, accordingly, the experience, not obtainable by those m the Dominion at the present time. "N.Z. Truth" by no means rushes to imply that her blue riband prospects are rosy, but would like to wait a while before voting one way or the other. . , , . It has to bo remembered that she was purchased for a decent sum by those who know more than a little about the game and evidently showed a fair trial. Alice Axworthy may turn out no champion, but there will be one or two ; keen judges greatly at sea if she fails to return her purchase price this sea- | son. R McDonnell is tutoring Evelyn Locanda with a view to racing this every- day pacer at New Brighton. a # * Sarella is enjoying a short refresher course prior to getting level with the crowd m the big race at New Brighton. # * * Peterwah has gone home to Gisborne, where his owner will keep an eye on his preparation for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Peterwah will return to Christchurch at the end of October to complete his essays for November. # * * Pet Liocanda is a serviceable member of J. J. Kennerley's stable. She is above the average and .will soon be ready to race. # , * ■ * i That good young pacer, Delightful, is m work again. He may be given a race at the New Brighton spring meeting.
