COSTLY ONE

Panther Fails In Both Starts The horse that gave punters a headache at Riccarton last week was the Trentham gelding, Panther. PIVEN a splendid show m the Winter Cup, he was made favorite. DrawIng a bad marble did not enhance his chance, but he began well enough. Running down the back he was within handy distance of the leaders — m a nice handy position. Then on the far turn something happened and Panther dropped out of the picture In a couple of strides, and was never seen again. On Saturday everybody was waiting to be on him and his crowd thought him a good thing. The public once again stuck to him and, to their dismay, saw him repeat ' the "Winter Cup running. Up m front he was early, and then he disappeared from sight and was lost for ever. This disappearing trick of Panther's has the crowd a little annoyed and there are some who are beginning to doubt his honesty. It was by no means his right form and it had his trainer thinking "hard. It is recalled the gelding was responsible for a like performance once before — at Awapuni when he was thought a home-and-dried proposition.
