The two races apparently knocked him for on the last day he was a very tired horse m the birdcage. ALili things considered the owner of Beau Cavalier must have thought himself foolish to take on the National Steeplechase. It was poor judgment. DOYAL DAMON had no luck the first ■ two days at Riccarton — he did not get a fair go — but on the last day when everything was m his favor he ran fourth. IMPROVED A LOT MQTHING improved more at the National than the hurdler, Carinthla. The first day he was never m it — fact, he was well m the rear. The second saw him run a good race and fade out over the last bit. The last day when he went to the lead it was* all over. He won with a, lot m hand. A HORSE called "Donation should never be allowed to tackle the tasks he was asked at- Riccarton last week. It was sheer cruelty. TRAINERS that try to be cunning 1 trip themselves m the long run. There was a case at Riccarton on I Saturday where a trainer, with two j horses, put the punters crook, but the one he backed got whacked. GOOD JUDGMENT MOT altogether satisfied with the ** weight allotted his gelding m the hack steeplechase on Saturday, Fred Waller decided to take on the big stuff. It was good judgment, for after going easily m behind the leaders for the major part of the journey, the Palmerston gelding came through and won the Lincoln decisively.
%^r#r UNLUCKY GAZE QAZE was an unlucky performer at the National meeting. ' He ran second to Nukumai m both the Jumpers' Flat and the National Hurdles. The last day the All Black gelding was feeling the effects of these two earlier races and ran poorly.
BACK HE GOES QN Tuesday of this week, Commendation was to have left Oringi for George Jones at Awapuni. He was getting too fresh out on the station and was a source of worry to all who were mixed up with him. i TWELVE months/ago the National x winner, Wiltshire, fell In a hunters' race at Ellerslie. Shows what ,improvement he has made m the interim.
NOT FAR THERE was some speculation how far Brigadier Bill would go over the Riccarton fences. . He didn't keep the crowd guessing long, for, when he came to the kennels, he pig- jumped the first and ran on! at the second. THE ground that Battle Colours lost at the start of the last race at Riccarton on Saturday was costly and it just about made the difference between winning and losing. A HORSE that did not show his right " form on the Riccarton trip was Locarno.HE MISSED SOUTHERNERS were inclined to give v Dubious a show m his engagements at Riccarton, but he missed. • Those who knew the gelding m the North Island would have been surprised to see him win a race over the country. r\UNEDIN owner, Bob Greenslade " does hot have the best of luok and Rotor ran two minor placings for him last week. pIMABUE, Oratrix and Concentrate are to pack off to Sydney by the Ullmaroa to-morrow. i* . . . ■ ■ WON'T Dp IT QN the track Atareria can hold his w own with the best, but In a race he goes like a pig. He had two runs at Riccarton and it is hard to say whom was the most disgusted — his owner, trainer or the two jockeys who rode him. MARTARMA is looking a picture of . health at the present time and later on will show them how. CONSEQUENT upon his win m the Winter Oats at Trentham, many were waiting for Fairy Herald the last day at Riccarton, but their wait was not profitable. /
