Last Sad Rites
I fore the leaves of glory had fallen from the tree of fate, and rotted on the ground, he would perpetuate the memory of Whangarei's famous club. He had -an evening of initiation for ! supposed members of the defunct Sawdust Club, and having obtained some badges with ' the mystic . initials "W.5.C.," he initiated several of his most intimate friends as members. The ceremony was duly carried out; the would-be member was laid on the floor and a small bag of sawdust rubbed into his hair, a metal badge was then presented to him, and he was declared a duly elected member. Such an affair could not be allowed to go dry and the wag who originated the idea was not one of the most backward to pass the flowing bowl. On waking m the morning he found to his horror, that he had omitted not ' only to remove the badge from his : coat lapel, but brush his hair. With great presence of mind he rose from his bed, detached the badge, and, at the same time, took the opportunity to brush his hair which was still very full of sawdust .
