HE CAME IN STRONGLY

Western King's Win Promises Big Things For Him Yet

(By "The Toff.") A HOT favorite m the former Australian pacer, Western King, -^ won the International Handicap run over a mile.

HE made a break when the barriers were let go and was back m sixth position with six furlongs to go. J. Shaw did not ask him to improve his position until the back stretch was reached where he pulled him to the outside of the field and let him go. He flew! At the five-furlong disc, he pulled into fourth place, but , had to do his work on the outside of two sulkies till the home stretch was reached. Once m line for the judge he gradually forged ahead, and won, going away from the field with a length and a-half to spare. Western King's. strong finish makes it plain that he will stay and he should collect a two -mile race before the meeting is over, provided the course remains In good order.

Talent and Glenelg began very fast, but with a furlong and a-half covered, Brentloc headed them. At this . stage, Tom Thumb was m fourth place and. Jean McElwyn was m a handy position. Brentloc was still m front as they wheeled for home, but when the turn was completed, Tom Thumb dashed to the front and for a furlong he challenged' Western King step by step. It was only after a "really hard .fight, that he succumbed to Western King's doggedness. ' The race will do Tom Thumb a lot of good, and he will go well m one of the thousand-pound events at the fixture.' Acron. broke down during the race.
