GREEN ONES
Is Two Miles Too Far For Them? (From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) The Auckland Trotting Club's 1928-29 season's programme has been published and the limits, to most of the events have been curtailed. TNTO the bargain, some alteration m the distances and conditions of some of the races is noticeable when making: a comparison with last year's bill of fare, and an additional handicap event figures on each day of the final meeting for the season. The events at that gathering for green trotters have, m the past, been decided over twelve furlongs, but In future, the distance will be two miles. This is one of the alterations that all Auckland adherents to the sport do not find favor with. Their contention is that as the meeting will probably be held m the winter, climatic condition's up north will be against the necessary late work to help their charges to go a distance. Previous years have seen trotters, when not able to receive the solid stuff owing to wet weather, not m the right order to go twelve furlongs, let alone two miles, and.the contention is offered that the distance of the events under discussion could have been left alone. Throughout the Auckland meetings two-milers will be well catered' for, as thirty-one of the fifty-six events are to be decided over sixteen furlongs. Two-mile races will give the public more for their money, but unless owners of moderates can get their charges to stay over a distance they will have to. rely on other, meetings to get a little of the cash. Harvest Child is a reliable pacer, but two miles is too far for him at present.
