THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS

Winter Cup Will Provide Race That Will Live Up To Past Traditions

NEWCOMERS MAY MAKE THEIR PRESENCE FELT

Two legs of the treble at the Grand National meeting, which opens at Riccarton on Tuesday, giveanything but cause for enthusiam, but the remaining event — the Winter Cup— will produce a race well worthy of ; the name" The big mile is the bright spot of the first day, and, as always has been the case, it presents difficulties that take a deal of surmounting. The usual big field will be there on hand and, once again, the usual pitfalls are m the path of selectors of the prospective winner. .

TpHB Winter Cup and an over-plus of 1 competitors are synonymous terms and, even though there is another acceptance after this is written, there is no reason to expect any great shrinkage m the size of the field. Several Cup candidates had an outing at Rlccarton last Saturday, but then quite a large number were not there. Trentham supplies the topweight m Black Mint and the big follow will merit a lot of attention. He showed good running at Trentham last month and it is no exaggeration to say that Riccarton will suit a lot better than Trentham did. He has weight to carry, but he is built on the right lines to lump it, and, once he gets straightened up, he will have a great run home to put m those big ones of his. Two furlongs_6f£ the post on Saturday, Taboo made a dab, but It was more his coming through on the false railthat caused his name to be called than anything else. • He is down four pounds next week, but that may not counter-balance the extra furlong to encompass. Paitqnu ran badly at Trentham. It was way beneath his right form, but even allowing this m, he does not make any great appeal. . Since being sold Royal Damon has not been responsible for any-* thing great, but on the middle day at , Trentham he was finishing like a {rain. , , He looked above himself then and if he strips more on the lean side next week he may be expected to do better. ,Solferite was very "proppy" m his preliminary last Saturday and never came into the picture during the running. On that outing his hopes cannot be assessed too highly. Kaiti finished up last season with three wins m a row. Reed was on him when he won the three and he there and then accepted the ride for this event. * Last year Kaiti ran a gallant race m the same race and it was not till within one hundred yards of the post that he was caught. He is a much better horse this year and will fight it out till the bitter end. Nincompoop Is a pig at the barrier and he was left on Saturday. It Js just possible. the same thing may happen next week, but .then on the other

hand, should he get away, he is just as likely to run the race of his life. Horses that are inclined two ways are not wanted by punters. Little has been heard of Lady Limond of late and she is not m any great demand. A return to her Christmas form would make her a bit of a nuisance. Royal Game had every show 'on Saturday, but never got to where he likes to be — m front. Over the last two furlongs he had no show. ' That would count him out of Tuesday's race, but . being coupled with Black Mint will bring money his way. Town Bank is not the winner, if recent happenings can be taken as a guide, but on the same basis Bisox has a great show-

Since the autumn she has been gradually, coming back to her early promise and at Trentham she got m and won a good one. However, there ia the inclination to think the field next week is stronger than was the case, at Trentham — and the conditions will be a little different, too. On the same mark is Panther and he is the one that appeals to a great many. It is understood that some time back this was his mission and when m fresh last month he surprised all and sundry by running such a great race m the open six the first day at Trentham.

He has all the capabilities needed by a Winter Cup winner. He begins well, can be handled m behind and then, when it comes to finish, will fight out every inch. Overdrawn may 1 improve with last Saturday's race and he will need to.. Wayward has been out of the public eye lately, but he has never acquitted, himself well enough to win such 'a type of race. . Having his first outing since the autumn First Sight was entrusted with the money on Saturday. He drew a bad marble — rind incidentally did not behave too well at the post — and this caused him to have to do a bit extra. . Turning into the straight he looked to be the winner and a little over a furlong off the post h^e appeared to have it on Royal Saxon. But he could not get to the Wlngatui gelding, though Ellis made strenuous efforts over the last two hundred yards. 1^ is m order to expect some improvement, but on Saturday's race Royal Saxon may beat him again. Master Doon is a doubtful one, while Gold Mint may not be able to give them a start and then beat them home. Bonogne and Rascal are not liked, but Chelone is sure to be somewhere about for a good part of the journey. Just whether he will run out the last furlong is another matter. Tuahlne and Malmsey competed on Saturday and of the pair Malmsey went the better. In fact, she ran a slashing good race. There is another race the same day that should suit her better. It is not till Royal Saxon and Locarno are reached at the bottom of the handicap that there is need for further comment. v . , Royal Saxon won rather niclly on Saturday and he was running on at the finish. Improvement will come his way, but some of the new ones may trouble him. Locarno is more than a good hack, and good hacks have won the Winter Cup before torday. Though m totally different company that second of his on Saturday bears investigation. This may not be the race for him to win, but he should not return empty handed from the meeting. Horses that are looked to are: PANTHER, KAITI and - BLACK MINT. 'iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
