HE GOT IT OVER EARLY

Brother Tom Mclnnes Went For The Doctor !

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) Auckland boxing fans received one of the shocks of their lives last Friday night. Tommy Mclnnes, the Australian Scotsman, was responsible for it.

SOME of the spectators left the Town Hall peeved because they had not had their moneys worth. Others felt — the conservatively minded — that the new arrival had not paid sufficient attention to precedent. ■ , . Knock-outs are not common m Auckland. • It's not done m the Queen City — at least it's not the general rule. But Tommy did not seem to be a man to stand on ceremony for entering the ring at 11.2, and all the preliminaries being over he fairly waded into Clarrie Pocock, 11.3%. Pocock did not wait for his opponent, but tried him with a left lead as a feeler. That was practically all that Clarrie had a chance of doing — except show his pluck— for Mclnnes went straight after his man like a stocky young Highland steer, and got home with a left as a beginning to Clarrie's head, followed by a right on the torso, and another quick short right to the head which put the Christchurch lad to the canvas. • For a moment they clinched as Clarrie rose at the count of five, then having eased away on his. feet for a fraction of a second Tommy closed m again with a stinging right to the other's jaw. Pocock was down again. Rising at five he wore a worried look, and tried to close m to gain time, but the Scot was not having any beg your pardon business; with a short arm right he jabbed Pocock, who again dropped. Taking the count of seven he came,

up, looking like a palm struck by a typhoon. Many men of less moral courage than Clarrie would have turned it m there and then. But not ao the southern lad. He came up gamely for the second round. Mclnnes was warned by the referee for being too eager In the' break away. ' His intention was to put the decision beyond all doubt 'm the shortest possible time. < A left to Pocock's jaw downed him again for 1 seven. Still game, Pocock rose to get a stiff right to the heart, which told at once, and a left jolt to the body. • ■ Clarrie's face showed that he had got it hard, but at the count of eight he staggered up, was on his feet for barely a second or twp before Tommy's left crashed to his jaw, and he was down for the seventh and last time. Four and a-half minutes' fighting and it was all over. The fans seemed wild. They cheered Pocock as he left the ring, but did not extend much of their applause to the winner. Possibly on the appearance of things the visitor was somewhat eager, but, with the exception of his one tactical error, he was not other than a boxer might be expected to be. That he made the pace a welter can-, not be placed to his discredit, and if he chose to give an example of his quality m the first two rounds, instead of m the last two, "N.Z. Truth" knows of no reason why he should not do so.
