Looking Through South Glasses
At Hunt Fixture
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Christchurch Representative.) ■ ' pVER since the Christchurch Hunt blub held its fixture a week , prior to the Grand National function, the contests have received added impetus. ■•:.;., ' . ; j
Nincompoop is well forward and has a good chance on Saturday.
SEVERAL candidates , for important engagements at the C.J.C. ; meeting, compete at the Hunt Club's fixture. Even if they do not win, their; form is closely watched by turf students. !■• There is no. reason why Grand .National horses should not secure one of the prizes at the Hunt fixture, for victory m any of the events will not bring about v ari increase of poundage for races at the C.J.C. meeting. So the road is clear to owners , desirous of picking up a small stake to pay expenses at the more important meeting .which opens a week later. At present, Oriflamb is m disgrace, and, if he bobs up m the Kennels Hurdle Handicap, he will pay a big dividend! On his recent form, he is entitled to: pay the machine. '-. Pink Rose is a useful sort; so is Gay Jim, but Goldtown may beat Thus it would seem that Goldtown, Gay Jim and Pink Rose should be prominent. ' 1 If Frisco Jack has any pretensions Ito Grand' National Steeplechase class, [then he may romp home m the Lawford Steeplechase. He should be too good. •■ ; ■ Ranui won over two miles and a-half at the South. Canterbury Hunt gathering and will go as well as most of the roughies. ;' ; V Captain Sarto has a jumper's chance, but should Frisco Jack not be up to standard, Message Boy will be m the money. . ' ..••..'• ' -v Assumingthat Frisco Jack is the goods, then he should be followed home by Message Boy and Ranui. ■ There is no disputing the fact that the three top-weights m the Longbeach Hurdle Handicap are better than the southern representatives. "Truth" refers to Red Fuschia, Brigadier Bill and Feneus. . Should they drop out on acceptance day, Heather Lad and- Nine of Spades will be handy at the finish. ; If that was Greenstone's real form j at Timaru, then he has no chance 'at Riccarton, but it is 'difficult to realize that it was his true worth. l So don't be upset if. ne stages -.a surprise, if not on Saturday, then' at the Grand National gathering. .. Dubious has been working well, and, along with Maunga, he is being.'favorably commented upon for the Homebv Steeplechase. . Passin' : Through is also engaged. , . , The Bfabazon Handicap, to be run over seven furlorigs," will bring out several Winter Cup candidates. Solferite looks to have benefited from his race at Timaru, but he will require another to sharpen hinvup for the big honors at Riccarton later on.
Tuahine is galloping well, but when the machine, closes First Sight will be among the big fancies, . ■ : Gold Mint is also m the list. X the ground suits him, he may retrieve his lost laurels. -.<.■■.' In what promises to, be a tight finish, First Sight, Tuahine and Nincompoop may be handy at the •finish. If Prompter is m the humor, he will go well m the Hunters' Plate, m which he may expect most opposition, from Pink Rose and Hyperion.,
The Flying Hack Handicap will probably bring out a big field, unless there is a falling out on acceptance day. •,. ' ' • ■ ' , Beau Geste is a better horse than when he created a surprise at Timaru, but he will have to take his coat off to beat Kalos and Meadow Lark. ||!|||||||||||||||||!lll!|l||||||]||||||||!lllllllllllllllll!llllllllli!lllll!llllll!illllllllillllimi
