SHIPPING HORSE-FLESH

Is Trainer Phipps Entitled To The Con cession? (From "N;Z. Truth's" Special Auckland - Representative.) . MOT so long ago the freight on a horse from Auckland to Sydney n was£9. \. /■';."'.■

NOW, lf you ship either, trotter, pacer or galloper, it costs £13/10/-, although a concession is made for yearlings, and they go for the old price, as do quadrupeds which earn their keep m other ways than sporting silk. Recently, the Epsom trainer, George Phipps, booked up Black Lila and Ohena with Huddart-Parker, describing them on the shipping note as trotting horses. Upon learning that there was a concession for others than racehorses, he immediately informed the shipping company that Black Llla was returning to Australia for breeding purposes. Could she, therefore, theoretically, be a racehorse. "N.Z. Truth" has it that a representative of the company who knew his "onions" got Into communication jwith the powers that be, and Dame Rumor has it that a wire sent to the : N.Z. Trotting Association brought forth the reply that both mares were m training. Acting on this , information, Phipps was informed that he could not claim

a concession, so he decided that he ■would not ship on the Ulimaroa. As a matter of fact, Black Lila has been off the scene for some time, and owing to a "dicky" leg it was considered unwise to further persevere with her as a racing proposition.' "Truth" does not say that the Association wired as stated, or wired at all, but if there is any foundation for the rumors going abroad then someone at the expense of Phipps may have blundered badly. It is stated that shipping companies m future will charge the £13/10/----freightreight on anything that has sported silk or is a registered racehorse, be they on' four legs or three. The suggestion is that the alleged wire coming from the Association on top of the Auckland owner's statement, certainly made it appear as if the owner was trying to work a shrewd point.. Such was not the case, but the shipping companies will probably not take the chance m future, and no concessions, will be allowed for horses for , breeding purposes.
