Cylinder Reamer Makes Rearing A Simple Task AN entirely new type of cylinder reamer has been developed m England, which should be invaluable to New Zealand garage
owners. IN England, the complete outfit costs only £16, so that even here the cost should not be more than about £25 at the outside. ■"■ . The new tool is hand' operated, and its construction is such that guarantees of accuracy are ' given for one-; quarter thousandth of an inch m roundness and one one-thousandth _ part of an inch freedom from taper. - - These figures are guaranteed, but, m I 1 practice, results even better are obtained. : ! In fact, under the supervision of a well-known motor writer, the tool proyed absolutely accurate, so that the new tool seems to be something out of the common. The reamer is a . barrel-shaped device from which protrude four blades,' two taking the form of guides, and the other two having cutting edges of an extremely fine nature. These blades can be expanded at will by means of a micrometer screw adjustment, which actuates a conebearing on the inner edges of the blades. The most striking part of the reamer is the rate at which it works. It is possible to remove the metal from the surface of an entire cylinder at the rate of one one-thousandth of an inch per minute, so that the truing of a cylinder block occupies only from 2% to 4 hours.
Tapering and curvature a^e removed simultaneously with the rounding 'of the cylinder block, and when that is completed all the cylinders are exactly the same size, the smaller ones being cut out to the same size as the largest. • . ■ ; ■ ■ v . - • . . . '■ : The? tool is operated by hand by means of a "T" handle, which is \ % . universally jornted at : its lower I ;.' vertically, regardless of the angle ', at which the. . handle may be 7 tilted. } ' ■.-'■■•/'■■■■'■■•': • ■ \ ';"■ ; The truing up of a cylinder black, becomes quite an easy" matter without removing, the engine from the frame." i It is only necessary to remove ■:: the. head .and the sjinip and to take put the pistons, which would, of .course, have to be done m any case if new pistons were fitted. . , .
