TWO DIVISIONS

An Opportunity For Otahuhu , (Jli'rqm "N.Z Truth's"^ Auckland Rep.) .In-Goulborn (N.S.W-) and Mcl- , bourne, the Derbies are run m two divisions,, one for pacers and the ' other for trotters. THEi same procedure could well be adopted m Auckland, for now that trotters are showing early speed it looks as. if a glorious opportunity is available m the north. At present, there is only one classic event each season, the Great Northern Derby, figuring on the Auckland programme. , .In this event 'trotters have not the ghost of a show against the strappedup brigade and are conspicuous by their absence. : There is now a chance for the Otahuhu Trotting Club to step into the breach, and. put on a. Derby for three-year-old trotters only. The Auckland club could— at their winter meeting — have a contest for two-year-old trotters, thus two extra classical events would prove ah attraction m the. north. . Of course, owners of older horses may not favor this idea, but by the breeder and the man who counts m the light-harness sport these events would be welcomed. During the past season or two, progeny of imported sires have developed speed very early. In coming years their number is sure to increase, for some breeders are going m for the game on a higher scale. The opportunity is here for the 'Qtahuhu club to come to the fore. :, It is practically certain that good results would be obtainable. The great American trotting stallion, The Harvester, 2.1 and 4.16, was recently sold for £200. He is getting on m years. # # * Tommy Direct' is being kept up to the collar m anticipation of collecting another prize m August. • #.■••■ Jack Shaw and J. Bullock each trained 16 winners this season, and A. i. Corrigan drove 18 that finished first past the post. Consequently they are the' North" Island cracks for the season. " ■•......'■•
