New Magistrate

HE has never sought the spotlight of publicity, but the Justice Department, m appointing James Miller, registrar of. the Christchurch Supreme Court, to the magistracy, has elevated him to a position where he will, m future, be very much m the public eye. For no magistrate, however modest or sliy of publicity he may be, can hope to hide his light under, a bushel. James Miller, stipendiary magistrate as he now is, will be sorely missed from the august deliberations and sombre atmosphere of the Supreme Court of the Cathedral City, where he has been for the past three years or so. The dignity' of the law sits well ! upon his shoulders. He is an impressive figure as he sweeps into eou/t m his gown of office, while he looks and acts everything the path of registrar dictates. ... To meet him m his office and to chat with him is to know a man to whom courtesy and obliging solicitude are as natural as breathing. He inspires the respect and esteem of everybody— and the staff swear by him. There are lamentations m the Supreme Court office because of his departure early m July to take over his magisterial duties at Masterton. • Barristers, staff and all , who know him regret his going, but are convinced he will make a capable S.M.
