Breakwater Bob
WHEN, not so very many years ago — ■ if you think' of them quickly— the
sailing ship "Taranaki" landed Bob Cardnow at Oamaru, there was no excitement m the city of white stone; but, if that self -same Bob were now to attempt to leave, half Oamaru would take it as a personal affront. : For Bob Cardnow, of the Oamaru Harbor Board, Is just about one of the most likeable chaps one could meet m a day's march. . ■ • Shipping work calls for more than a passing amount of good, cold reasoning power. And Bob has that. ' He has been on his • job now for something like twenty-eight years, and, so they say, he has enthusiasm enough to put many a youth to shame. With sea and land staffs .of the various ' shipping concerns, Cardnow enjoys a popularity which might well teach the rising generation that a smile and a cheerful devotion to duty cannot fail to make friendships that will endure.
