NO GUIDE FOR TREBLE
Wanganui and: Egmont Form Again 4 Leaves Us Stranded (From. "N.Z. Truth's" . Special Auckland Representative.) Once again form at Egmont and Wanganui winter fixtures proved no guide when it came to selecting the big treble at the Great Northern fixture. ,
"M Z. TRUTH" pointed out this pos--1N« sibility some few weeks before the meeting took place. The big money all went to northerners which were being: prepared at home, while the visiting section were engaged at the fixtures farther south. Certanly, the north had a great advantage in numbers over the visitors when it came to fighting out the rich stakes, but, nevertheless,, the results of late years go to prove that southerners need something up their sleeves if they hope to catch any of the big stakes at EUerslie in June. It is no goo.et bringing only those of mediocre -class for the. conditions at Ellerslie are different from those which most southerners are accustomed to. In the first place, there Is the reverse way round to contend with, while the big field difficulty is another factor. Prior to 'the meeting, it certainly looked as if the best of the visiting
section had a royal chance of taking the G.N. Hurdles, but luck played a strong part in saving the stake for the north. "Truth" is of opinion that had Perle de Leon stood the strain of training — or had Mister Gamp cleared the obstacles safely — Beau Cavalier would have met more than Ms match. The Cornwall > always looked against a visitor taking the prize, but Maunga's staying ability and fitness augured well for the prospects of the southerners being afforded a chance of taking the Great Northern Steeples. However, It waß not to be. Because no real visitor Has figured in the winning list of the Great Northerns or Cornwall during the last two years, it would seem that punters in future will deeply need to consider "stay-at-homers," besides Egmont and Wanganui form, in their attempts to land the Great Northern treble- I—or1 — or even double.
