OPEN SPRINT
Speed Merchants At Wingatui
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) The. pick of the southern sprinters appear among the fourteen acceptors for the Tradesmen's Handicap, the open sprint race on the first day at Wingatui. DOOSTER has earned his 9.13, but he D -wilj have to contend with several promising speed merchants whose recent form will bring them into favor. Iting Balboa dropped out of the i Birthday m favor of the sprint. If his stablemate, Queen^ Balboa, happens to land the Birthday, he will be afforded tons of support, though only if the track is dry. He seems to be safely held, however, by Royal Game, which carries weight well m any kind of going and races well when fresh. He has had an unusually leisurely time of late and looks one of the hardest to beat. If the going is sloppy, Taboo might be reserved -for' this race; the heavier the turf the will be his chance. Gay Sonnet was a Timaru winner and has gone on the right way since. Being a quick beginner, she can be relied upon to see out a fast-run six. Nine of Spades had fair form when he raced m the" north, but as he did not staft at Amberley, there is no line on his present capabilities. Further down the handicap is Antrim Boy, and Ke looks like the. pick of the" 1 lightweights. " ' He handles heavy going well and won so decisively at Timaru that he cannot be overlooked. Money Mine is a consistent lightweight, but summing it up, it looks like Royal Game, Gay Sonnet and. Antrim Boy taking a hand at the finish.
