Into It Again PROM Wanganui comes word that *■ Mark Carroll is m work again, and that he is training diligently. Carroll would like to have a go at the lesser feathers and he mentions Hatton m particular. No offence to Hatton m calling him "lesser," but there is only one Leckie! # # # After Him UP m Palmerston they have a near heavy-weight who is very ;keen to meet the New Zealand champion, Jim Leckie. He is Byrne, a likely-looking sort of a lad, and those who know him best say he can look after himself. ■■# * • Going Well I OPE TENERIO, who fought m Syd- **• ney as Tenario Pelkey, , is going big m the States at the present time. When he runs into a southpaw it will be interesting to see how he fares, for, when m Sydney, Havilah Uren did everything to him but knock him back to the Philippines. Headed Off? WELLINGTON has been negotiating with Norman Radford to make the trip over, but now that Jack Kilmartin is In Sydney it may happen that Otago will get the Englishman. Napier comes into the picture, for, prior to Radford going back home some months agoi they had written communication with him. Radford promised the Bay association to come over to them. Wonder who will get him? . . m • " # *' ■ ; ■ ■'' On A Quibble THERE is quite a lot of quibbling going: on over the recent Leckie — Melton fight. Many wagered that Leckie would win by a knock-out and, some who bet the other way, are now refusing to pay because Leckie won on a technical k.0.-^-the referee stopped it. Those who bet against a k.0., and who will not pay, are m the wrong.; The mere fact of the referee having to stop the contest is enough to show that Melton was done— another punch and he would have been done brown. Because the referee was humane does not allow those with liabilities to escape— if they are sports.
Gives A Hand THOUGH Charlie Cann has retired and left his bantam title vacant, he has not altogether dropped out of the game. Now and again he steps himself out m Tom Souter's gym. at Wanganui and spars with the boys. # * # Retains Title GAMMY MANDELL, light-weight v champion of the world, better known as the Sheik champion, managed to hold his title the other day when he met and' beat Jimmy McLarnin m a terrific battle. "Baby Face" McLarnin caused quite a sensation earlier" m the year when he knocked Sid Terris'^n jig time — one minute and forty-seven' seconds, and he was then hailed as v the next champioiv There's many a slip. * # * Turned Pro. I ARSEN, the Wellington amateur ** champion, has turned pro. and he wishes to meet any boy who thinks he has a claim to the bantam title. "Dummy" was a good amateur and always ready to mix it. His popularity was immense.
