NOT BAD SORT
Two Outings of Some Note The Hastings trainer, Vern. Colello, .likes a jurnper — and a steeplechaser for preference. TWO -YEAR- OLDS, sprinters and 1 handicap horses are all right m their way, but to Colello there is nothing like a good timber-topper. He has had a few through his hands, too, and nobody knows more about them than th© self-same Colello. He was at Wanganui last week with a hack 'chaser and the trip was paid for. His hack, Mixed Heather, won the first day, albeit he was more than a little lucky that Radiate slipped and fell when m front, after clearing the last fence. Then, on Saturday, the hack had to take on the hot stuff and he rather distinguished himself by running second to Puwhero. And had he not been asked to cover so much ground, he might have given the winner some trouble. Mixed Heather is owned by Jim Macfarlane, who raced Landbird. He may take the place of the latter, which met an untimely end at Riccarton. Jim is a good sport arid deserves a good horse. He has been m work some time and got over the right country m promising style last week. i ■ • REGARDING the Great Northern ** fixture, the latest is that Beau Cavalier may start m the hurdles with Sam Henderson aboard. T EWELLYN is an unlikely starter m ■" the big steeples, but if he stands up to the hurdle engagements on the first two days, he is intended as a competitor m the Winter Steeples on the final day,
