Comical And His Rider Mark It down— Comical has at last sucoeeded In getting round a steeplechase -course. AND the honor must all be given to *** an amateur rider — one R. Russell, a well-known hunting enthusiast from Hawkes Bay. Till the first day at Wanganui, Comical had done everything but the right thing. . He had fallen, shot his jockey out of the saddle and had refused. But not so last week. Russell allowed Comical to have his head when the chestnut was fighting for It and then after a couple of furlongs took a nice hold of him. Once or twice the gelding wanted to refuse an obstacle, but his amateur rider showed him who was the boss of the outfit. "With the journey half covered, Comical was throwing his tail m the air-— the best sigm that he was quitting I—but1 — but Russell kept at him. Half a mile off the post he appeared to be beaten to a frazzle, but hia rider got at him and Comical came again to run fourth. The day previous to the race Russell injured an arm In the hunting field and under the circumstances he established a somewhat remarkable performance^.
