NEXT BIG ONE

At Trentham This Month

With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday meetings over, punters now get a spell to breathe — and recuperate.

TAKING it by and large, those who * have tried to break the tote have come out of it as per usual. Or to qualify, they have failed in their quest.

The next big meeting to occupy attention is at Trentham on January 21, 23 and 25.

The big race — the Wellington Cup — for which nominations are now being taken, should attract all the best handicap horses in the land.

. Notwithstanding the undenied popularity of the two-mile New Zealand and Auckland Cups, there are many owners and trainers who fancy the mile and a-half Trentham journey.

When nominations close it is expected that included in the list will be the names of Star Stranger, Mask, Rapier and perhaps Te Monanui.

It is possible that the last-named

will be allowed to miss as he has

never shown his best on the track.

With such material to work on, Handicapper Coyle will be able to make a fine adjustment.

A BLOW TO PUNTERS

CAUCY LASS started punters off , badly on Summer Cup day at Ellerslie, and never ran within seconds of the time she registered for third in the Queen's Plate two days previously.

The Fergusson mile took 1.41, with Saucy Lass well beaten and never putting any ginger into her work. She pulled up sore and will have to be treated carefully on hard tracks. /
