Ellis Was Always In The Money
It is wonderful how one firstclass horseman can dominate a small meeting.
MOT that Marton can be termed a "small" meeting, but with all the head horsemen away in Auckland the meeting can be dominated by a rider. Such a state of affairs prevailed on Monday.
Bert Ellis, who is at present on the head of the 'winning list, was lord of all he surveyed.
He had seven rides and had he not given up hurdle riding for some time he could easily have had eight.
Ho started off by riding Le Champ into third place in the Maiden and then Fee Simple was second in the next evenf.
Only by his vigorous riding was it that Stormy won the Marton Cup.
Then followed another success on Broad Acre but Arrow Lad could only finish third.
The next race he was a winner again — this time on Hoylake. Then the last race of the day he was second on Wanderlust.
Three firsts, two seconds and two thirds was his day's work, but his riding money would not come to that of the winner of the rider of the Great Northern Derby.
Still, small fish are sweet,
