TURN COMES AT LAST
Mandane and Pegaway Fight A Spirited Duel
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) Mandane was a long 1 time winning a really good race, but her turn came in the important Summer Cup at Ellerslie.
IT was no good thing, though her great track work at Ellerslie prior • to the fixture suggested that Fred Tilley had the daughter of Panmure — Cherry Mart in the very best of moods.
As a matter of fact, the bay mare had to indulge in a very spirited combat with Pegaway before she survived by a head only.
But she proved herself game enough
to answer the late demand made on her by Jockey Wiggins, and it says something when a racer will answer such a strenuous call.
Pegaway was called upon for a similar effort and he also answered gamely, while he was giving away 7lbs. to the mare.
Both had to come from a good way back over the last half-mile and perhaps Pegaway had the worst early passage of the pair.
It was a very spirited finish indeed, with In the Shade two and a-half lengths away thir.d. and Battlement fourth.
The real top -class handicap horses were missing that day and in a field of ten Cohesion looked likely to hang •on to the front as he rounded the home bend.
That there was some merit in Mandane's victory was proved by the fact that the ten furlongs were carved out in good time, the sectional times being: 13 4/5, 25 2/5, 38 2/5, 50 3/5, 1.3 3/5, 1.16 2/5, 1.30, and the full distance in 2.6 4/5.
