NOT FOR HIM
Count Cavour's Three Cup Seconds (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) To earn 1800sovs. in place money in connection with the Auckland Cup — and yet not actually win that event — is certainly somewhat hard on an ambitious owner. VET such is the achievement with which Count Cavour has credited Owner Barrett by racing into second place in three successive years. This all goes to show that if horses at the present time are to gather in first money they must not get up anywhere near the 9st region — or else be super-horses. Rapine was certainly saddled with over 9st when he won, tout he may be referred to as a. great "hanclicapper," besides being favored with a remarkably clear run throughout. Count Cavour was saddled with 8.13 when he acted as runner-up to Rapine, 9.5 when he trailed Tanadees home last year, and 9.5 again when he earned his 600sovs. behind Rapier on Monday last. "The Count" has certainly been unfortunate in not gaining an Auckland Cup outright, but the lesson is obvious. N lf you want an Auckland Cup make a moral of it by attempting the task with a stayer lower down in the weights than "The Count" has been.
T ICINIUS ran his usual good race the first day at Awapuni and finished fourth. The second day he was second. It seems as though he is fated not to get the thick end. MOUNTAIN HEATH ran for the first | time in his now owners' colors at Awapuni on Tuesday. He spoilt his run of successes by failing to get a place. In fact, he made a poor showing, but it may be passed by.
