AR CHIE BURNS — Educationalist
TOLERANCE is the keynote m the character of Archibald Burns, the unassuming 1 , purposeful personality who presides over the deliberations of the Auckland Education Board of which body he has been a member for sixteen, years. Plain-spoken, with a wealth of 1 public service experience behind him, perhaps the most pleasing trait m Arch Burns' composition is his unaffected manner — he aims not at superficiality. A native of New Zealand — his parents hailed fra' Glasgow — the earlier years of his life were spent m Thames m which town he first commenced his apprenticeship m serving the public as a member of the borough . council, later as mayor and m the years that followed, as a member of the various public boards governing the activities of the community he served. Though selected on one occasion to enter the noisy sphere of politics when the late J. McGpwan resigned his seat, he declined the doubtful honor thereby showing good sense and sound judgment. Matters educational though, are really his long suit and Aucklanders have known him m this field of labor for many years as a member of the Education Board and as its present chairman, member of the Auckland Grammar School and of the Auckland University Council. An appeal for support of anything m the nature of an athletic association or club will find the vulnerable point m his armor.
