Centuries Go Way Of Varsity
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wellington Rep.) With the exception of the display given by Varsity, there was little to enthuse over m the displays given by the senior teams m the Wellington cricket competition last Saturday. WITH the grounds m excellent order " and the general conditions all that could be desired, it was expected that some thrilling batting would be witnessed. However, small scores -were the order and six bowlers were responsible for the majority of the wickets, all avevaging five a piece. Varsity ran up a total of 419 against V.M.C.A. A. M. Rollings (108), E. T. C. Leys (77), E. McLeod (58), R. H. C. Mackenzie (not out 43), and W. Domer (33) were the main contributors to Varsity's total. Copeland, 5 for 104, obtained most wickets for V.M.C.A. Y.M. were somewhat indifferent m their Held work. The outstanding feature of the game was the bright display of batting by Hollings. Always confident, he executed some spectacular strokes and gained no fewer than 11 boundaries. The students go to the wicket to score, and they are not afraid to take risks. V.M.C.A. have an uphill fight. Midland tackled Wellington m confident style and although their sojourn at the wicket was brief they succeeded m registering 264 runs. A. Doneghae and A. Bruce were the main contributors to the total. Cousins came out with the best average m the bowling, taking 6 wickets for 72 runs. Wellington so far have lost 5 wickets for H8 runs, Whitwell being not out with 48. Both Kilbirnie and Institute provided ordinary displays of batting for senior teams. C. Armstrong knocked up 61 for Kilbirnie. H. B. Massey with 4 wickets for 35 runs and H. Prince with 5 wickets for 36 runs accounting for the others m easy style. Dempster failed to .make a stand for Institute, but H. Foley and J. Banks compiled 60 and 50 respectively.
Old Boys going to the wicket first compiled 185 runs against Petone, the scores being distributed evenly between James, Lambert, Ronaldson and Burns. Brice did best with the ball, obtaining 5 wickets for 54.
SPetone made a poor response, the grand total only reaching 68, out of which Smyrk notched 23. Duncan 5 for 17 and Tucker 5 for 49 doing the trick.
Thorndon and Hutt met on the latter's ground. The bowlers held sway throughout. Thorndon compiled 147 and Hutt 104. McGirr obtained 5 wickets for 68, but he made a blob with the bat. E. Foley 6 for 39 and Hyder 4 for 63 accounted for the Hutt batsmen.
