Placed Horses In Jellicoe
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Aucfr
land Rep.)
To state that the defeat of Cardinal Logan m the Jellicoe Handicap at the Otahuhu fixture came as a shock to trotting fans is putting it mildly. THIS will easily be understood when it is explained that "The Cardinal" was backed down to odds-on, while many refrained from planking their cash on him because the southerner was not returning enough. There was not much m the defeat, Hendricksen's charge being less than a length away ln third place, while he went within 4-sths of a second of the time he was set to go. Unfortunately for his supporters, both Jewel Pointer and Black "Lila, which headed him off. for the main money, also went within two and three-fifths of seconds respectively of their handicaps under the perfect track conditions. • * In short, Cardinal Logan caught the local pair at their very best. The impression, formed of the favorite as he wavered over the last bit of a stirring struggle was that he was not quite himself on the day — presumably because • of his late, arrival from the south. "The ' Cardinal's" defeat certainly makes it clear that there are no morals at the game. In his case, not only were, the pun- '. ters tripped, but also the layers, who were inclined to take no risks about him ln their meagre quotations for doubles. . In fact, most of the •books" gave the Jellicoe Handicap a miss when it came to doubles, preferring to quote prices on other events. "The Cardinal" earned his exes by annexing £100 for third. From his display, there is no reason to desert him for future events.
