How Whangarei's Popularity Is Threatened
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.)
It is just possible that Whangarei's popularity as a racing rendezvous will heap a bundle of trouble on the heads of those responsible for placing the northern township on the turf map.
FACT is, Whangarei has gone ahead too fast. It has outgrown its f racing location — Kensington Park (which is altogether unsuitable for the large fields which the prize-money on offer comrnaxids. Just how the Whangarei Racing Club will overcome the difficulty is no easy problem to solve. It is certain that fields of eight are ample at. present for safety— and if each horse is to have reasonable prospects. There 1b little room available at the park x Xo make improvement, unless noney is found m plenty to alter objectionable bends by suitable curving md banking.
However, all clubs should aim at courses nothing less than ' a mile m circumference, with plenty of room across the track. Perhaps the best way out for Whangarei, if it wishes to retain the popularity so vigorously earned, is to consider the advisability of finding some more suitable property for racing purposes. If not, Whangarei cannot hope to carry on its winning way, while there is also the risk that it will lose many of its present patrons. The racing heads of the north are made of the right stuff to tackle the difficulty facing them, and it is to be hoped they will take note of the threatening danger.
