DERBY TRIAL

Nine-furlong Run For Them

The concluding event on Saturday — the Riccarton Handicap — will be something m the nature of a Derby trial. THREE candidates for Monday's classic are engaged and two of them should occupy a prominent place m the betting. Paleta is rated, as a pound better than Laughing Prince. The former has fifteen pounds over weight-for-age — the latter a stone — and to Avin will enhance their Derby prospects. Last year Commendation won with 9.9 — twenty-five pounds over weight-for-age. Paleta and Laughing Prince should make a good battle of it, but they will by no means have it on their own. There is a horse called Black Duke engaged and he won a double at Wingatui. He is well above the average.. T'iega ancl Vertigern are two that can gallop, while Margaret Birney has been m the money m handicaps of late. Rowley won at Masterton and seems now to have struck the form he was showing when his present owner bought him. Ark Royal, the other three-year-old, may go well. Nincompoop likes the course. The punters may be inclined to think of recent form when the time for closing draws near. Three with their share are LAUGHING PRINCE, PALETA and BLACK DUKE.
