HIS TREBLE

More For Pouri Over Small Timber

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland

Rep.) Seldom was a horse better placed for a run of victories than the aged gelding Pouri at the recent Waikato fixtures. DROBABLY it was well thought out, * for the Matthews people — who came into fame years back by providing a surprise winner of the New Zealand Cup m Star Rose — should know all there is to know about the game. Pouri was qualified as a hunter and was. already handicapped for a hurdle event and bracelet at Cambridge m the minor hunters' class before he ran away with a hurdle event of better class at Te Rapa a few days previously. As he was at 9.0 for his open- | ing engagement, the rehandicap for the Cambridge fixture interfered very little with his prospects. Pouri won all three races and brought much handy coin to his connections, who supported the aged son of Spalpeen with some confidence throughout. The manner m which he won his hurdle events suggested that there are more, for him ' over the small timber, while the fact that he qualified as a hunter suggests that he will have to be respected over country later on m the season.
